When my second child was born, they came about five weeks early. I’ll use the pronouns “they/them” for privacy reasons when referring to my kids. The fact that you can blend such totally different styles together and somehow make it work is one of the greatest interests to me as an artist. I used to draft different versions of the exterior onto graph paper because of the fascination I had with this movie as a child of the 80’s. It is interesting to know that the house was merely a shell and never really existed. However, I do feel that one day an exact replica of this home would be an amazing tribute to the film and architectural style.
The open interior of the fake building was used as a basketball court by the film crew, and the “roof” was actually painted canvas that sagged. When filming exterior shots, the fake building was pressurized with giant fans to make the “roof” puff up to look like a real roof. The “cover” from the bridge was re-purposed, and is in use at the Northeast Slopes ski area, a few miles away on Rte 25.
This was just for exterior shots, while they shot most of the interiors on a soundstage in Culver City, California. Despite all this, there are still many real-life locations that fans may want to visit if they ever find themselves in Vermont. The delightfully mashed-up 1980s/Victorian house where most of the movie takes place was specially constructed on-site for the film and was mostly just a façade. The hill where it was built, however, can be seen on the main road at the southern edge of the downtown area. A closer view of it can be found off of Jewell Lane, which is basically the driveway to the farm on which the hill stands.
