Poe resided in Philadelphia from 1838 to 1844 spreading his time among four different homes. This is the only house of Poe’s four Philadelphia residences still standing. When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. Over the next week, both Roderick and the narrator find themselves increasingly agitated. A publisher seeking to bring luster to a science project had Poe write an introduction to a work called, "The Conchologist's First Book" (a conchologist studies the shells of mollusks). It seems by many accounts that Poe's introduction was based heavily on a treatise published in Scotland which went uncredited. In some sentences, Poe didn't bother to change the original author's phrasing at all.

The most loosely interpreted story in "The Fall of the House of Usher" is probably "The Gold-Bug," the title of which is only briefly mentioned in the episode that sees Tamerlane Usher (Samantha Sloyan) meet her fate. In the show, Goldbug is a super upscale, customized lifestyle subscription box that Tamerlane hawks from her Goop-like company before she dies. The wellness guru is already unstable by the time of her presentation, and later that night, she dies after a hallucinatory episode ends with glass shattering on her bed. The narrator also notes that Madeline's body has rosy cheeks, which sometimes happens after death.

Lenore herself takes her name from a Poe poem about "the queenliest" young lady who has just passed. During this time, Poe finished his only novel, “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym,” which was released in 1838. Though "The Raven," published in New York, brought him tremendous acclaim, the poverty and drunkenness which dogged him his entire life finally got the best of him.

Even with the help of a new and influential friend, lawyer and writer John Pendleton Kennedy, Poe was mostly unsuccessful. His hopes for financial security became even more desperate in 1834 when John Allan died, leaving him out of his will. Kennedy finally succeeded in getting the Southern Literary Messenger to publish several of Poe’s stories and to offer Poe the job of editor, a position that he kept from 1835 to 1837. During this time, Poe published stories and poems in the Southern Literary Messenger. It was, however, with his extensive publication of criticism that he began to make his mark in American letters. In the case of Poe's story, though, Prospero throws the party in the midst of a plague — he's basically a one-percenter breaking quarantine rules. The plague itself causes horrific symptoms including bleeding from the pores, and the woman who arrives at the party is meant to be the illness personified. After Prospero confronts her, he dies, and his party guests also end up slain — by the Red Death they could've avoided if they'd just stayed home. There are many overlaps in the design of Prince Prospero's party however, as Poe's tale describes many rooms for debauchery, and of course, it's a masquerade.

The “cover” from the bridge was re-purposed, and is in use at the Northeast Slopes ski area, a few miles away on Rte 25.

This was just for exterior shots, while they shot most of the interiors on a soundstage in Culver City, California. Despite all this, there are still many real-life locations that fans may want to visit if they ever find themselves in Vermont. The delightfully mashed-up 1980s/Victorian house where most of the movie takes place was specially constructed on-site for the film and was mostly just a façade. The hill where it was built, however, can be seen on the main road at the southern edge of the downtown area. A closer view of it can be found off of Jewell Lane, which is basically the driveway to the farm on which the hill stands.
