GM Introduces New Super Cruise Features to 6 Model Year 2022 Vehicles

Super Cruise will not detect vehicles crossing the road ahead, including at intersections, and will not automatically steer or brake to prevent a collision. It is important that you always stay engaged and vigilant at all times while driving. It is important that you always stay engaged and vigilant at all times when driving. Super Cruise† is a hands-free driver assistance technology for compatible roads.

Lane Change On Demand

The electric automaker’s Full Self-Driving program is operational on local roads and residential streets and purports to handle more complex situations like roundabouts, traffic lights, and four-way stops. How well it handles these scenarios is open to debate, as regulators and safety experts continue to evaluate and study the technology. Super Cruise cannot steer to avoid any objects (including vehicles, animals, pedestrians, bicyclists, potholes, debris, construction barriers or cones). It is designed to help you stay in a single lane and works with Adaptive Cruise Control to help you keep distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you.

FIRST ALERT

GM launched Super Cruise in 2017 with the Cadillac brand and has added capabilities, expanded Super Cruise-enabled routes and availability on more products since then. To date, approximately 10 million miles have been driven by customers using Super Cruise across the U.S. and Canada. Super Cruise will be available on 22 vehicles by 2023, including Cadillac LYRIQ10 and GMC HUMMER EV SUV11. Additional vehicles that offer versions of Super Cruise include the 2022 Cadillac XT612 and the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV13.

ANOTHER INNOVATION FROM CADILLAC

In the event that a map update is not completed within seven months, Super Cruise will be disabled. In order to get Super Cruise working again, you must either drive the vehicle long enough for the automatic updates via your OnStar service plan to take effect or visit the dealer to have a new map update downloaded to the vehicle for free. Additionally, Super Cruise should never be used under difficult or uncertain driving conditions. Adaptive Cruise Control†Works with Super Cruise to automatically detect vehicles traveling in the same direction in its path. Controls acceleration and braking to maintain a driver-selected following gap, even in stop-and-go traffic.

Back to Driver Assistance

When GM launched Super Cruise—its hands-free advanced driver assistance system—in 2017, it had around 130,000 compatible highway miles. Super Cruise works a little differently than some other ADAS systems, such as Tesla's misleadingly named Full Self-Driving, as it only works on predetermined roadways. Now, GM is nearly doubling the system's scope, bumping it up to 750,000 miles across the United States and Canada.

AWARD-WINNING DRIVING INNOVATION

Automatic updates via your OnStar Super Cruise plan will occur for the latest Super Cruise road availability information. Super Cruise will use the Adaptive Cruise Control† set speed; however, if you have not set the Adaptive Cruise Control speed when Super Cruise has activated, it will use your current speed as the Adaptive Cruise Control set speed. The Super Cruise system is a highly sophisticated system and should only be serviced by technicians with the proper training, tools and safety instructions, which are qualifications Chevrolet dealers have. Without these qualifications the vehicle may become damaged. Super Cruise will use the Adaptive Cruise Control† set speed, however if you have not set the Adaptive Cruise Control speed when Super Cruise is activated, it will use your current speed as the Adaptive Cruise Control set speed. When the Super Cruise Symbol and steering wheel indicator turn green, you’re ready to go hands-free.

Trailering with Super Cruise

This feature wasn't equipped for our 2022 XT6 loaner, but we've used it on one of GMC's trucks, and while it's disconcerting at first, we found it reliable and helpful. We've experienced Super Cruise a few times but rarely take press cars on long freeway trips. So, when this writer was charged with driving to Las Vegas to drive McLaren's new supercar, Cadillac was good enough to supply an XT6 so we could spend quality time with Super Cruise on the four-and-a-half-hour road trip.

While there have been hundreds of crashes of Teslas while using AutoPilot or the Full Self-Driving beta software, according to Miller, in 160 million miles of driving with Super Cruise, there have been no crashes attributed to the system. GM also added some features to SuperCruise, and updated others, such as Lane Change on Demand, Automatic Lane Change, Enhanced Navigation, Hands-Free Trailering, and Improved Curve Handling. When Super Cruise is engaged, move the turn signal in the direction of the lane you’d like to change to. You do not need to fully latch the turn signal to activate Lane Change On Demand. That’s the decision three buddies and I made when we chose to check this locale — which serves as a base camp for some pretty killer backcountry skiing and splitboarding in the Chic-Choc Mountains — off the bucket list.

But You’ve Gotta Stay Engaged — and That’s a Good Thing

In addition, in the Bolt EUV, Super Cruise does not move to one side of the lane when passing traffic. To disengage Super Cruise, take control of the steering wheel and then press the Super Cruise button again, press the brake, or pull the Regen on Demand†. If you grab the steering wheel and press the brake pedal, Super Cruise and Adaptive Cruise Control will disengage.

For new GM vehicles built on the automaker’s “VIP electrical architecture,” the expansion will be available later this year and will be delivered at no additional charge via an over-the-air software update. Vehicles not built on the VIP electrical architecture, which include the Cadillac CT6 and XT6 and the Chevy Bolt EUV, will have to wait a little longer. GM intends for Super Cruise to be available in 22 models by the end of 2023.

Super Cruise, the “hands-free” advanced driver-assist system (ADAS) from General Motors, will soon be available on a lot more roads in North America. GM announced today that, later this year, the ADAS system will be able to operate on 400,000 miles of roads, including non-divided highways — which would essentially double Super Cruise’s current coverage in the US and Canada. Early in a Lane Change On Demand maneuver, you can cancel it by moving the turn signal stalk away from the direction of the lane change. When you do this, your vehicle will return to its original lane and the Super Cruise symbol will remain green. At any time during the maneuver, you can cancel Lane Change On Demand by manually steering.

With an attentive driver, and under the proper conditions, Super Cruise can permit hands-free operation of the vehicle. The technology functions with OnStar®† and uses real-time cameras, sensors, GPS and LiDAR map data to detect curves, helping to make long drives and commutes more comfortable. General Motors may be struggling when it comes to fully autonomous driving, but the company is still feeling bullish about the future of hands-free driving. Today, it announced plans to expand its Super Cruise advanced driver-assist system, which allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on certain roads, to cover nearly double the number of miles it did before. Having tested hands-free systems from numerous automakers over the years, GM Super Cruise remains the most robust in terms of its ability to hold a lane, change lanes smoothly and work consistently in challenging lighting conditions. While that isn’t as much as the 2 million miles that were planned for the next-generation Ultra Cruise system that was originally scheduled to launch this year, it’s still several times more than another hands-free system.
